[YDD] How to use your AiM Solo to improve your driving

Ahead of the Curve

This week: A new workshop [link] | Coachineering at your service

Your AiM data can tell you how to drive faster. If only you knew– or could remember– how Reader!

I was coachineering a leading racing driver recently.

A very successful businessman, and one who takes no prisoners.

He knew his AiM data could probably help him – he’d just never done it, nor even seen it done well.

He’d been sold on the dream of data but all he’d experienced was a frustrating nightmare.

After only two sessions together, he was lapping 0.7sec faster – consistently!

No heroics. No major changes. No time with me in the car.

Just 2 insights from the data – that if he approached turn 2 and turn 4 slightly differently he would be faster.

And he was.

He didn’t believe me at first – that is why it took two sessions!

But that was my coaching challenge – the numbers were clear.

Even if you’ve used it before, Race Studio 3 (RS3) can be overwhelming.

If you’ve ever clicked 5 wrong buttons in the hope of getting the variance trace up, I feel ya.

But what if you knew it was worth the time and effort to fire up the laptop?

That you would remember how to bend RS3 to your will? – and, quickly!

AiM data analysis doesn’t have to be a nightmare for you anymore.

Over two 45-minute live sessions, I’ll show you exactly what buttons to press – and in what order.

Using nothing more than AiM Solo data you’ll discover what happened, where and why– so you can improve your driving next time out.

You’ll discover 7 of my favourite go-to approaches.

We’ll look at things you can do in 5 mins, 30 minutes, or when you’re back at the hotel.

I’ll cover what you can do on your own, or when you want to compare with another driver.

We will also look at onboard video and how you can use it with your data.

A couple of starters. Couple of mains. Two puddings and an after dinner mint!

Done.

You can only learn this stuff by doing it but you won’t be on your own.

After workshop 1, I will provide you with sample data to practice on (or you can bring your own).

Between workshops, I’ll also give you access to a private community.

Here you can share your questions and practice progress with other attendees and myself.

By the end you won’t know every nook and cranny of Race Studio 3 — but you will know how to make “doing data” much more worthy of your precious time.

Then it’s over to you and driving faster – first time, this time!

From Around The Web

Thank goodness for Oliver Bearman. What I loved about his drive in Saudi was his assertiveness – and then his honesty. He showed a few drivers up with his approach. And was then magnanimous to admit not only that he was tired, but also that the Hulk had the better of him for a bit. I also thought it was interesting to hear the effect of the battery - as we don't often hear drivers talk about that. Looks like Russell was lucky their wasn't another lap and fingers crossed they can all catch up to RedBull...

This week: New Pod Willem Toet | Fun from around the web Hello Reader, For episode 50 (yes!), I had the absolute pleasure of talking with Willem Toet on the podcast. Willem is the former Head of Aerodynamics for the Benetton, Ferrari, BAR, and Sauber F1 teams. In addition to a host of aerodynamic insights and practical suggestions, Willem also shares a bit about his background growing up in Australia. It's fair to say he didn't have the easiest start, but little did he know that when he broke...

Hello Reader, We are not born with an ingrained ability to learn a race track. But knowing the race circuit (really) well is essential to you being fast. Yet learning takes time. Time you may not have for extra testing days or extended simulator sessions. You can just hope for the best. Try to figure things out as you go along. Or, you can try some preparation beforehand – like reading written guides, studying track maps and watching online videos. This weeks article is about levelling up...

This week: Working out the Key Corners | Podcast update Hello Reader, What is the most important corner on a racetrack? In other words, if you could go just a little bit faster anywhere, where would you get the biggest laptime return? You have hairpins, fast sweeping corners, slow chicanes, high-speed S-bends, corners over crests, corners through dips, fast corners into slow… and on (and on) it goes. Just think “pure laptime” for now. Where would you consider the most critical corner to be:...
