[YDD] What can you learn from an F1 suspension guru? (A lot.....)

Published almost 2 years ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader,

Yes engineering in professional motorsports is a lot about numbers, simulation and computers.

What is not so obvious, well certainly to me at first, is how good teams - especially Formula 1 teams - are at prioritising limited resources.

Yes limited resources, just like you and I!

In this two part podcast special I talk with F1 suspension guru Richard Firth. He started in F1 at Jordan - a perennially "under funded" F1 team - and has subsequently through his career gone on to work at several of the big name teams too.

The way F1 engineers think about the same problem we face (i.e. how to get driver and car around the lap faster) is fascinating.

There are some real nuggets of insight in this show. Clearly, if your interest is in tuning your suspension but also around driving. You might be pleased to hear how good drivers are at sensing things that are otherwise hard to measure - even in F1!

I hope listening to how Richard describes his ways of working, will stimulate your thoughts and ideas. It was a real pleasure to have him on and I very much hope you get a lot out of listening too what he has to say.

Link below - with shortcuts for key parts of the show - or it is available on your usual podcast player of choice on Apple, Google or Spotify podcasts.

Let me know what you think!

p.s. You might have seen that I'm experimenting with putting out more content via social media. There are themes for each day where you can get short snippets and insights that aim to add value your motorsports. I'll be honest I'm a bit behind the curve when it comes to this social stuff.

Can you give me a signal of where is best for you by "liking" and "following" our pages on any or all of:

Facebook,

Instagram,

Twitter,

YouTube,

Linkedin,

TikTok

and/or, let me know anywhere else you hangout online? #overwhelming 😊

In the spirit of optimising ones resources, I can then look to prioritise putting out content on the social channels that work best for you.

Ahead of the Curve This week: A new workshop [link] | Coachineering at your service Your AiM data can tell you how to drive faster. If only you knew– or could remember– how Reader! I was coachineering a leading racing driver recently. A very successful businessman, and one who takes no prisoners. He knew his AiM data could probably help him – he’d just never done it, nor even seen it done well. He’d been sold on the dream of data but all he’d experienced was a frustrating nightmare. After...

This week: New Pod Willem Toet | Fun from around the web Hello Reader, For episode 50 (yes!), I had the absolute pleasure of talking with Willem Toet on the podcast. Willem is the former Head of Aerodynamics for the Benetton, Ferrari, BAR, and Sauber F1 teams. In addition to a host of aerodynamic insights and practical suggestions, Willem also shares a bit about his background growing up in Australia. It's fair to say he didn't have the easiest start, but little did he know that when he broke...

Hello Reader, We are not born with an ingrained ability to learn a race track. But knowing the race circuit (really) well is essential to you being fast. Yet learning takes time. Time you may not have for extra testing days or extended simulator sessions. You can just hope for the best. Try to figure things out as you go along. Or, you can try some preparation beforehand – like reading written guides, studying track maps and watching online videos. This weeks article is about levelling up...
